Who We Are
Mission: To preserve and strengthen comradeship among its members; to assist worthy comrades; to perpetuate the memory and history of our dead; and to assist their widows and orphans; to maintain true allegiance to the Government of the United States of America, and fidelity to its Constitution and laws; to foster true patriotism; to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom, and to preserve and defend the United States from all her enemies.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) was founded in 1899 by veterans of the Spanish-American War and Philippine Insurrection to secure rights and benefits for veterans, who were then without medical care or pensions. By forming local chapters, the VFW gained momentum, reaching nearly 200,000 members by 1936. The VFW has contributed to veterans’ memorials and, through its nearly 2 million members, provides scholarships and advocates for veterans’ interests.
What We Do
The organization played a pivotal role in establishing the Veterans Administration, creating the GI Bill, developing the national cemetery system, and advocating for compensation for those affected by Agent Orange and Gulf War Syndrome. In 2008, it helped pass a modern GI Bill, providing educational benefits for active-duty and reserve members.
