Last year, more than fifty million students enrolled in public schools across the United States, but one of those students dropped out, on average, every nine seconds. While high school graduation rates are on the rise, dropping out of school persists as a problem. With fewer employment opportunities and an increased probability of living in poverty, failing to attain a high school diploma negatively impacts students, families, and communities.
To keep students in school and to help them achieve, the Midland Independent School District has established major strategies for prevention, intervention, and recovery efforts. Our goal is to increase the district’s graduation rate and reduce dropout rates. In an effort towards reaching our goal, MISD will host its 12th annual Dropout Recovery Walk beginning at 9:00am September 14, 2019 at Bowie Fine Arts Academy 805 Elk Ave. Teams of volunteers will visit the homes of students who did not return to school in the fall to personally encourage them to continue their education and share with them the many programs MISD offers to help them graduate.
Interested community volunteers will be teamed up with MISD personnel to conduct home visits, followed by a catered lunch as our thanks for their time and dedication to the students in our community.
