Community Engagement Volunteer

We are currently recruiting Allocation Panel Volunteers to review funding proposals. Panel Volunteers Members usually volunteer 15 – 25 hours during Year One, with fewer hours required for the Year Two and Year Three reviews. Most work is done between March and May, between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Festival of Trees Volunteers are needed to assist with this event.  Festival of Trees is quickly becoming a family tradition in the Permian Basin.  The event features over 45 fully decorated trees that our guests can win through a tree drawing (only $1 a ticket)  This fundraiserrasier supports the Permian Basin APS Board who provides resources for elderly or other vulnerable adults who are experiencing abuse, neglect, or exploitation.

Friday - November 7 we need volunteers to assist with set up for the event, including decorating, checking in tree donors, and setting up children's area, stanchions and more. Volunteers will receive 5 tree drawing tickets.

Saturday - November 8 we need volunteers to assist in the children's area with craft activities and letters to Santa, to help with admission and tree drawing ticket sales, and general clean up. Volunteers will receive a Festival of Trees T-shirt to be worn as they volunteer and 5 tree drawing tickets.  In addition we are looking for local mascots and entertainers to perform throughout the day.

Sunday - November 9 - we need volunteers to assist with tear down and pack up, tree wrapping, and assisting tree winners load up their trees.

Join us as a volunteer docent for WILD at The Preserve—our seasonal early childhood education program focused on connecting young learners with the natural world through science, play, and exploration.

As a docent, you’ll help guide children and their caregivers through nature-based learning stations, assist with hands-on activities, and support our education team in making each weekly session a fun and meaningful experience. No teaching experience is necessary—just a passion for nature and a willingness to learn.

Looking for a joyful and meaningful way to give back? Join us as a Playtime at the Playa docent and help young children and their caregivers discover the wonders of nature through open-ended play and exploration! Playtime at the Playa is part of our early childhood programming at The Preserve. These sessions are unstructured but thoughtfully guided, offering hands-on nature activities and outdoor exploration designed to spark curiosity, confidence, and connection.

As a docent, you’ll help set up activity stations, engage with families, and support a welcoming and safe space for discovery. Each session loosely aligns with our WILD at The Preserve curriculum, creating consistency across both experiences. Caregivers attend with children, and you’ll be part of a team that makes learning in nature accessible and joyful. No experience required—just bring your enthusiasm, kindness, and love for the outdoors!

Summer Literacy Camp is really so much fun! It's a camp for 2nd-7th graders where they play fun games, learn a little bit and have cool experiences!

Opportunity for YWLA student volunteers

This opportunity allows students to clean up trash or lost balls on the course/in the rough. The ideal time for this opportunity is when the weather is cold and the snakes are asleep.

We also offer assistant coaching opportunities where volunteers work with our younger participants ages 7-9; these opportunities are available in the spring, summer, and fall.

HopeWorks is a 10 week peer support group for grieving children ages 4 - 18. These classes are facilitated by trained volunteers. HopeWorks is offered twice a year, in the Spring and Fall.

Tuesday night HopeWorks sessions are for children who have experienced a loss or change through divorce, separation, incarceration, deployment, adoption, or foster care. 

Thursday night HopeWorks sessions are for children who have experienced the loss of a loved one through death. 

Volunteers are needed from 6:30-8:30PM. All volunteers must attend volunteer training and submit to background checks. The next available volunteer training is August 16th from 10 AM - 1:30 PM at Rays of Hope Children's Grief Centre. If you are unavailable on this day, please let us know and we can host a session during normal office hours during the week. 

HopeWorks Tuesday night sessions will be held on the following dates:

Sibley Nature Center is in need of volunteers to support the maintenance and upgrade of the Sibley Nature Trail System. Located on 49.1 acres of land in Midland, Sibley manages a public trail system that is available to the community 7 days a week, sunrise to sunset. Volunteers are needed to assist with trash pickup, weeding, mowing and general campus maintenance. Interested volunteers are invited to work with the Sibley Campus Maintenance Technician, Monday - Thursday 9a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers who would like to support during other hours are welcome. All volunteers must call ahead and speak with staff before signing up to volunteer at Sibley.

Friendship Night is open to all special needs adults in the Midland Odessa Area. It is a night of fellowship and fun. We provide a meal, make a craft, play some games and do a little bible lesson with our Friends before they leave for the evening.

We can have between 30 - 90 special needs Friends depending on the night, so we can always use the help, with passing out food, helping them complete the crafts and just getting through the evening.

Jubilee Center needs people to help stock our pantry on the Fridays before our distributions that take place on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month. This includes loading freezers and organizing food in preparation for our pantry.  We also have a senior distribution that immediately follows stocking from 11:30am-12:30pm that volunteers are asked to stay and help with. 

Hello CHAP Students,

 Below is a worthy service opportunity for CHAP students and organizations to volunteer and help children in foster care!  WHIT is a non-profit that provides free tutoring to foster children.   

WHIT is needing 25 tutors ASAP to support 25 foster students with tutoring for 1 hour/week, until the end of school, with the option of tutoring through the summer as well!  We know many students go home when the semester ends, but tutoring can also be done virtually.  One hour a week can make a world of difference to these young kids who deserve to have an ally in their education. CHAP students can be that ally!

WHAT DO TUTORING SESSIONS LOOK LIKE:

 Tutoring sessions occur weekly for one hour and can take place in person or virtually, depending on where the child is placed.

Face-to-face tutoring sessions can only take place at the public or University library in the town where the child is placed. Virtual sessions take place via the Zoom or Teams platform in a very engaging one child/one tutor setting.

Once we get word that your background check is cleared and you have completed the online training, I will email you congratulating you on officially becoming a WHIT tutor and I will work on matching you with a child in foster care waiting for a tutor!

Senior Life Midland Meals on Wheels can help! Volunteer can get up to 3 hours a day Monday through Friday. Kitchen volunteers will stand in an assembly line packaging 500 hot & cold meal for our homebound seniors. All volunteers will get a 10–15-minute break in between. The United Way of Midland occasionally has special projects we need assistance with throughout the year.  The following projects may be required:

Volunteers needed to help distribute food during our distributions on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month. Volunteers help clients select food inside our building, help with restocking, or may be asked to assist clients to their vehicles once they are done shopping. 

Big Brothers Big Sisters is in serious need of mentors for the children on its waiting list. If you can spare an hour or so a week, and can say things like,  "I'm proud of you" and "You can do it", you're qualified to serve as a Big Brother or Big Sister.

This is a test volunteer opportunity for training purposes. Students may NOT volunteer with the Legacy Program as part of their community service requirements.

The Bush Family Home relies on volunteers to provide tours of the historic home and staff our gift shop.

Students seeking to get community hours for Legacy Scholarship programs or other programs can help us by serving as gift shop clerks, helping with routine cleaning and other general office help. Hours are based on your schedule. Saturday hours available!

Unlimited Dance Company is a program offered by Midland Children’s Rehabilitation Center, a nonprofit outpatient pediatric rehabilitation facility.  Our dance program offers dance classes at no cost to the families for children with special needs ages 4 -21.  We are looking for volunteers who are interested in working with these children to help them learn dances to perform in their dance recital.  The dancers perform in two recitals per year, one at Christmas and one in the spring.  To be a dance volunteer, the only requirement is a willingness to work closely with children with special needs.  NO DANCE EXPERIENCE NEEDED! Volunteering for this program is also a great way to earn volunteer/observation hours when applying to graduate programs, particularly if you are interested in working in the medical/rehabilitation field. 

Tuesday evenings 5:30-6:30 PM, including a Christmas recital and a spring recital (5:45-7:30) 

***We need volunteers who can be available weekly so that our dancers have consistent instructors/helpers.

***We are also in need of volunteers who would be willing to eventually teach one of our dance classes.  To be a dance teacher, dance experience is not required, but the volunteer would need to be able to create a basic dance for the dancers to learn and perform at their dance recital. Our mission and goal is to help fight hunger by supplying emergency food assistance to those in need.  Volunteering at Faith Kitchen Ministries is a wonderful way to give back by sharing your gifts, having fun, and getting involved. Faith Kitchen Ministries offers great opportunities, whether you are looking to volunteer regularly, or you are just interested in something short-term.

Minors under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult age 21+ to serve. If you bring multiple minors, you must bring one adult for every five volunteers under 16. We ask all volunteers to arrive 5-10 minutes before the listed start time.  Please plan to give yourself ample opportunity to locate the building, get checked in, and be ready to start on time. Please dress appropriately and comfortably; no spaghetti strap shirts, short shorts, leggings, or revealing clothes.  Also, (CLOSED TOE SHOES ONLY) No flip-flops, sandals, or heels are allowed in the warehouse for safety purposes. Some volunteers will be asked to work in a cold or hot area that is not air-conditioned for the duration of the shift.  If you need accommodations during your volunteer shift, please get in touch with us as soon as you sign up for your shift so that we can discuss options. Kids First is a supervised visitation program that provides a safe, conflict-free, low-stress space for kids to build and maintain a bond with and attachment to their noncustodial parents. That’s a boring synopsis, but Kids First @ Centers is an amazing little program that is very hard to describe.

Custodial parents are mothers, fathers, grandparents, foster parents, or other relatives who are trying their best in an odd situation. Noncustodial parents are moms and dads for whom life has taken an unexpected turn.

In amongst all of this turmoil and confusion are the kids. We tell parents that we take the name “Kids First” very seriously. The children who come into this program are our priority. Their emotional and physical safety is of utmost importance. Even through all of this struggle, anger, and fear, we see kids who run into the arms of their visiting parent, who spend four hours a month laughing, playing, talking, and eating with a parent who they love and miss.

THIS is where YOU come in! As a Kids First volunteer, you will monitor visits between the children and their noncustodial parent(s). You will get to see them build their bond. You will get to help the kids feel safe and secure. You will be part of the amazing service we offer.

In Midland, we offer visits on the first through fourth Thursday evenings each month and on the first and third Saturday mornings each month. On Thursdays, our monitors arrive by 5:50pm. The visits are 6-8pm. Generally, all the kids have been picked up by 8:15pm. On Saturdays, our monitors arrive by 10:20am. The visits are 10:30am-12:30pm. Generally, all the kids have been picked up by 12:45pm.

The minimum age for a volunteer is 18 years old. A background check will be run through the Texas Department of Family Protective Services for each person; this can take about a week. We will conduct a training class that includes a tour of the building, an explanation of duties, and coverage of the rules the participants must follow.

At the end of every month, we send out a schedule for the following month to volunteers. Then, you sign up for the days you are able and willing to volunteer!

You can volunteer from home as a virtual small-class instructor with Permian Basin Adult Literacy Center.  Lead a small group of English Language Learners in a weekly virtual class utilizing PBALC provided curriculum.  Possible class topics include Grammar, Pronunciation, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, and U.S. Citizenship.  You can also volunteer to teach a special topics class based on your particular area of expertise or lead a virtual Cafe focused on developing confidence in conversation skills.  Please note- all volunteer instructors must be 18 or older.  Volunteers will be required to fill out a volunteer application, pay a $35.00 criminal background check fee, and complete a volunteer orientation.  Online, self-paced training is provided to volunteers.

Reading and Writing Tutor: Many of our One-to-One students struggle with dyslexia or other learning disabilities.  Volunteers will complete training for the Barton Reading and Spelling System, the curriculum and teaching method which will be used for One-to-One instruction.  

English Language Tutor: To work with an English Language Learner, volunteers will complete training using the Intercambio Confidence and Connections tutor training, an online, self-paced training.

Volunteer to lead PBALC's Cafe, a casual small-group class that encourages student confidence and improves conversation skills in non-native English speakers. Cafe class discussions have ranged from American idioms and places to travel, to the differences between holiday traditions in various countries!  This opportunity is available both in-person and online.

There is no set curriculum--rather, we encourage our group leader and students to converse on general topics of their choosing.  The Cafe provides students with a comfortable environment to ask questions about words and phrases they come across that they do not understand.

Do you have a passion for teaching adults?

PBALC needs volunteers to instruct our adult students in various areas of literacy: English as a second language, citizenship classes, digital literacy classes, grammar, reading and writing, and more. You do not need any special certifications, prior teaching experience, or second language skills. Permian Basin Adult Literacy Center provides training and constant support so that you and your student(s) will have everything you need for success!

Our literacy instructors teach small groups of no more than 12 adults at a satellite location (church, library, etc.) in the Permian Basin.  Instructional content is determined by the type of class being taught, and resources for instruction are provided.

Community Educators are volunteer public speakers who help the Alzheimer's Association raise awareness, provide education and expand the reach of educational offerings in the community.  These volunteers deliver presentations using prepared training materials on topics related to Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias.  We ask for a minimum of one year commitment.

We need people to interact with cats and kittens using play, and petting, to get them ready for adoption.  All of our cats are Street cats, and while most are friendly, sone need help with social skills. 

Bike MS is the fundraising cycling series of the National MS Society and raises more money than any other cycling event for any other cause. To date, Bike MS cyclists, volunteers, and donors have raised more than $1.3 billion to stop MS in its tracks, restore what's been lost, and end MS forever. By volunteering, you can be a part of this growing movement!

We are in need of a volunteer to join our Steering Committee for our Cactus & Crude Event. This is a historic fundraising ride which raises over $100,000 dollars annually for those living with MS. The Steering Committee assists with the long-term planning of the ride in the months leading up to it.

The open position is for Medical Support Team Lead. This Volunteer Lead works closely with staff to recruit and manage certified first-aid volunteers to provide treatment along the route as needed. Assists staff in organizing medical/emergency resources for the event (ex. supplies, communication plan, coordination with support vehicles, etc.). Before the event, will contribute to pre-event safety training and work with staff and Supply Team Lead to ensure each location has an adequate amount of medical supplies. Licensed medical professional with connections in the community is strongly preferred.

This role is crucial in ensuring the safety of all staff, volunteers, and participants associated with the event. Must be available to volunteer half a day the week of the event, commit to serving both days during the event, and attend monthly committee meetings. Averages to ~2-3hrs per month leading up to event and ~20 hrs during event week (including the event and pre-event responsibilities).

Legacy Program Volunteers assist with whichever administrative support tasks are needed. Volunteers must be able to pass a background check and volunteer-hours may only be accumulated during business hours--Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Hotline Volunteer Advocates sign-up for one-week shifts.  Volunteers answer calls from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m., Monday thru Thursday and from Friday at 5:00 pm until Monday at 8:00 am. Hotline Volunteer Advocates must be 18 years of age and be able to pass a background check and go through the 40 hour SAPT training (provided by MRCCAC).

Hospital Accompaniment Volunteer Advocates  Volunteers respond to the Midland Memorial Hospital emergency room from 5:00 pm until 8:30 am, Monday thru Thursday and Friday after 5:00 pm until 8:00 am on Monday, when a sexual assault victim presents at the ER for a sexual assault exam. Volunteer Advocates must be 18 years of age and be able to pass a background check and complete the 40 hour SATP training (provided by MRCCAC).

While this is likely the most difficult of our volunteer tasks, it is essential and can be rewarding. Advocates provide support and resources to victims in a time of crisis. Clients accompanied by an advocate are more likely to seek other services such as advocacy and therapy. 

Family Greeter Volunteers provide support and comfort to children and/or family members by accompanying them while waiting for a forensic interview or during a court case. Family Greeter Volunteers must be 18 years of age and be able to pass a background check and complete a 6 hour training course enabling them to provide crisis intervention with child-victims and their families.

Pawz for Kids is a “therapy dog” program which provides abused children with the ability to interact with gentle, specially-trained dogs, providing a unique opportunity for healing and acceptance.  You must have your own dog.  

Obedience training is the first requirement for a prospective Pawz for Kids volunteer team (dog and handler).  A temperament-test by the dog trainer will be requested.  Finally, the dogs are tested and certified by Therapy Dog International, Inc. Handlers must be able to pass a background check and complete a training course on providing crisis intervention with child-victims and their families.

MISD students can volunteer to help students directly through activities such as but not limited to math and reading tutorials, help with science fair projects and serving as a mentor to younger students.  Student volunteers can also assist teachers, coaches and administrators with projects on campuses.

Assist at the Children's Therapy Center with various tasks.

The Museum of the Southwest is looking for volunteers to help clean and maintain the interactive exhibits and activities at our Fredda Turner Durham Children's Museum.  Children's Museum volunteers will help straighten up areas of the museum, maintain the self-painting area, help answer visitor questions, and provide directions. Training will be provided and once training is complete, volunteers will be scheduled for specific days and times to volunteer.
