Volunteer Opportunities From: Midland College Legacy Scholars Program

Jubilee Center needs people to help stock our pantry on the Fridays before our distributions that take place on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month. This includes loading freezers and organizing food in preparation for our pantry.  We also have a senior distribution that immediately follows stocking from 11:30am-12:30pm that volunteers are asked to stay and help with. 

Hello CHAP Students,

 Below is a worthy service opportunity for CHAP students and organizations to volunteer and help children in foster care!  WHIT is a non-profit that provides free tutoring to foster children.   

WHIT is needing 25 tutors ASAP to support 25 foster students with tutoring for 1 hour/week, until the end of school, with the option of tutoring through the summer as well!  We know many students go home when the semester ends, but tutoring can also be done virtually.  One hour a week can make a world of difference to these young kids who deserve to have an ally in their education. CHAP students can be that ally!

WHAT DO TUTORING SESSIONS LOOK LIKE:

 Tutoring sessions occur weekly for one hour and can take place in person or virtually, depending on where the child is placed.

Face-to-face tutoring sessions can only take place at the public or University library in the town where the child is placed. Virtual sessions take place via the Zoom or Teams platform in a very engaging one child/one tutor setting.

STEPS TO BECOMING A WHIT TUTOR FOR CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE:

1. Filling out the WHIT tutor application is the first step to becoming a volunteer tutor.

Potential WHIT tutors click on the link and then fill out the application and hit the submit button. The application then comes to us, and we email the potential tutor with the next steps to becoming a WHIT tutor. Next steps include: 

 2. Fill out our fillable background and confidentiality forms. (I have the forms included as attachments on an email I send to you once you complete step 1).  

3. Complete the self-paced online training while your background check is being processed and cleared (I provide you with the training link once you complete step 2).

 4. You are matched with a child in foster care waiting for a tutor! Once we get word that your background check is cleared and you have completed the online training, I will email you congratulating you on officially becoming a WHIT tutor and I will work on matching you with a child in foster care waiting for a tutor!

COMPASSIONATE CHILDCARE ASSISTANTS support our staff with the Junior Life Skills sessions on Monday evenings.  An age-driven curriculum is used to help our youngest clients to learn to succeed in school & life!  A kind heart and a dedicated spirit is required - training is provided.

The United Way of Midland occasionally has special projects we need assistance with throughout the year.  The following projects may be required:

Big Brothers Big Sisters is in serious need of mentors for the children on its waiting list. If you can spare an hour or so a week, and can say things like,  "I'm proud of you" and "You can do it", you're qualified to serve as a Big Brother or Big Sister.

Fridays are Fun Fridays where we go on Field Trips. Some Fridays we stay in house and do things - so those days we can use volunteers.

This is a test volunteer opportunity for training purposes. Students may NOT volunteer with the Legacy Program as part of their community service requirements.

We will be cleaning and sorting donations and organizing items. 

Students seeking to get community hours for Legacy Scholarship programs or other programs can help us by serving as gift shop clerks, helping with routine cleaning and other general office help. Hours are based on your schedule. Saturday hours available!

Unlimited Dance Company is a program offered by Midland Children’s Rehabilitation Center, a nonprofit outpatient pediatric rehabilitation facility.  Our dance program offers dance classes at no cost to the families for children with special needs ages 4 -21.  We are looking for volunteers who are interested in working with these children to help them learn dances to perform in their dance recital.  The dancers perform in two recitals per year, one at Christmas and one in the spring.  To be a dance volunteer, the only requirement is a willingness to work closely with children with special needs.  NO DANCE EXPERIENCE NEEDED! Volunteering for this program is also a great way to earn volunteer/observation hours when applying to graduate programs, particularly if you are interested in working in the medical/rehabilitation field. 

Tuesday evenings 5:30-6:30 PM, including a Christmas recital and a spring recital (5:45-7:30) 

***We need volunteers who can be available weekly so that our dancers have consistent instructors/helpers.

***We are also in need of volunteers who would be willing to eventually teach one of our dance classes.  To be a dance teacher, dance experience is not required, but the volunteer would need to be able to create a basic dance for the dancers to learn and perform at their dance recital. Dance director is available to help with this process as needed.

***Volunteers should be 14 or older

Community Educators are volunteer public speakers who help the Alzheimer's Association raise awareness, provide education and expand the reach of educational offerings in the community.  These volunteers deliver presentations using prepared training materials on topics related to Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias.  We ask for a minimum of one year commitment.

We need people to interact with cats and kittens using play, and petting, to get them ready for adoption.  All of our cats are Street cats, and while most are friendly, sone need help with social skills. 

Legacy Program Volunteers assist with whichever administrative support tasks are needed. Volunteers must be able to pass a background check and volunteer-hours may only be accumulated during business hours--Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Hotline Volunteer Advocates sign-up for one-week shifts.  Volunteers answer calls from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m., Monday thru Thursday and from Friday at 5:00 pm until Monday at 8:00 am. Hotline Volunteer Advocates must be 18 years of age and be able to pass a background check and go through the 40 hour SAPT training (provided by MRCCAC).

Hospital Accompaniment Volunteer Advocates  Volunteers respond to the Midland Memorial Hospital emergency room from 5:00 pm until 8:30 am, Monday thru Thursday and Friday after 5:00 pm until 8:00 am on Monday, when a sexual assault victim presents at the ER for a sexual assault exam. Volunteer Advocates must be 18 years of age and be able to pass a background check and complete the 40 hour SATP training (provided by MRCCAC).

While this is likely the most difficult of our volunteer tasks, it is essential and can be rewarding. Advocates provide support and resources to victims in a time of crisis. Clients accompanied by an advocate are more likely to seek other services such as advocacy and therapy. 

Family Greeter Volunteers provide support and comfort to children and/or family members by accompanying them while waiting for a forensic interview or during a court case. Family Greeter Volunteers must be 18 years of age and be able to pass a background check and complete a 6 hour training course enabling them to provide crisis intervention with child-victims and their families.

MISD students can volunteer to help students directly through activities such as but not limited to math and reading tutorials, help with science fair projects and serving as a mentor to younger students.  Student volunteers can also assist teachers, coaches and administrators with projects on campuses.

Please include the following in the notes section when submitting your hours. First & last name, ID number, campus currently enrolled at, school where hours were completed and the contact person at the campus.  If this information is not included, your hours will not be approved.

Note:  Copying papers and putting up classroom display will not be approved.

Rules and Expectations for Volunteers:

Excessive tardiness and rescheduling will not be permitted. Volunteers will be allowed three “late days” or opportunities to reschedule. After three chances, Youth Services staff will evaluate whether the volunteer may continue to complete his or her service hours at the library.

Midland County Public Libraries circulation volunteers assist library staff in processing and organizing returned books, DVDs and other media. Background check is required for all volunteers 18 or older.  

Come help with general maintenance and cleaning around COM. We have needs almost all the time!

We always can use help around the station! Whether it's putting together mail outs to all our viewers, creating goodie bags for family events, or putting together craft supplies for our virtual events!

Each year, with the help of MISD school counselors, we select 5th-grade students and take them to Op Camp. They have crazy fun and develop relationships with high school and adult mentors. Op camp will be held in Brownwood, TX June 27- July 2. High School students who serve at Op Camp in 2021 will receive 120 legacy hours for their service.

We are looking for volunteers to help side walk alongside the horses while therapists conduct their sessions. Hippotherapy, or therapy on horseback, is a physical, occupational or speech and language therapy treatment strategy that utilizes equine movement.  Hippotherapy literally means  "treatment with the help of the horse."

Midland County Public Libraries need volunteers at each location to help clean and sanitize books, DVDs, and CDs. Other tasks may include dusting and tidying shelves and organizing areas of the library. Background check is required for all volunteers 18 or older.

Are you artistically inclined? We're looking for volunteers willing to share their creative talents in order to bless our patients, facilities and their staff through painting on their windows. We have several facilities in town that are excited about the opportunity - now we just need the volunteers to make it happen!

We are looking for adult mentors in guiding teens during table time discussion. 

Young Life Capernaum gives young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities the chance to experience fun and adventure, to develop fulfilling friendships and to challenge their limits while building self-esteem through club, camp and other exciting activities.

Individuals provide support for the office (front desk help, answering phones, organization of supplies and other various projects depending on the time of year), specific events (depending on the time of year, this could include Star Spangled Salute and any of our other member/community events) and other duties as assigned.  This position helps us further the mission of the Chamber of Commerce to support our members in Midland.  Individuals will be interacting with members, potential members, small and large business owners, various other volunteers and the general public.  Good people skills necessary, office experience a plus.  Ability to lift a minimum of 15 lbs required.  Individual must be a self starter and able to work with various individuals to accomplish a common goal.  Interview will be required of individuals interested.

Help needed for various community events and assistance

Whether you have never felt the heft of a hammer or you are a master carpenter, Midland Habitat could use your skills building decent affordable homes in Midland.  The Habitat construction crew builds 6 days a week and could always use a couple more hands.  Tony Valles, our Construction Superintendent has been building and teaching people how to build for over 40 years. He is an excellent teacher who is willing to take the time to teach the why as well as the how. Keith Jackson the Construction Assistant has worked with hundreds of volunteers and knows how to get the job done and have fun doing it!

From individuals to groups up to 20 people, Midland Habitat can use your skills. From the kindergarten teacher who is an expert at play-doh (putty is not much different) to the contractor building 15 homes at a time, Habitat can find a place for you. The crew will never ask you to do anything that you are not comfortable doing, and are willing to teach you how to use any tool on our site correctly.

Assisting Staff with needs

Helping to pack weekend food bags for children who are food insecure.  

Need volunteers to clean the store (sweep and wash floors, restroom, dusting of furniture)

Need volunteers to sort and file books. Training provided.

need volunteers to stock the housewares department. Requires good organizational skills.

Need people to unload the trucks of donated items and sort those items by categories. Also, if you have a valid driver's license you may be asked to drive the truck to the homes of people needing to make donations of furniture or other large items.

Need people to sort clothing, hang clothing, bale clothing and stock the store with clothing.

Midland Memorial Hospital is looking for Adult Volunteers age 18 and above to staff the Information Desk. People skills are required as you will be greeting visitors and taking them to their destinations, looking up room numbers, or giving directions for off-campus locations.

Shifts are 4 hours once per week. Weekday and evening shifts are available, as well as weekends. 

Volunteers are needed at the Enhanced Adoption Center caring for dogs and cats who are trying to find their furr-ever home. The volunteer must be over the age of 18.
